From Cambridge to New York City

Welcome back to our road trip across America to visit today’s innovators in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Our first visit introduced us to Bruce Schneier in Cambridge, Massachusetts, cryptography specialist. The next stop on our trip across the country takes us from Cambridge to the Big Apple. Pass around the Twizzlers and crank up “Where Is My Mind” by the Pixies on the radio, because we are going to New York City!

We can’t resist checking out all the touristy spots first—the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building…and, of course, a hole in the wall place to get authentic New York-style pizza. The slices are so wide they must be folded up like tacos—and we are here for it!

It’s now time to visit Bruno Franceschini, the Director of Building Automation and Temperature Controls at Jaros, Baum, & Bolles. In business for over 100 years, JB&B is an engineering firm specializing in building intelligence and architectural lighting design. Franceschini has been with the firm since 1989, leading the industry in the design, installation, and operation of building automation systems. He makes our list of top contributors to the field because of his innovative designs for integrating complex individual systems. He makes it possible for lighting, security, vertical transportation, SCADA, and fire alarms to work together in centralized systems.

SCADA, or Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition, is a computerized control system that enables the monitoring and commanding of controller setpoints. If you remember from our post about the PID Controller, being able to adjust setpoints easily and remotely is key to building automation efficiency.

Franceschini is also at the forefront of recent movements to help make building automation more sustainable, as he is a U.S. Green Building Council LEED Accredited Professional. The USGBC encourages the design of green buildings, which can “save money, improve efficiency, lower carbon emissions and create healthier places for people.”

We appreciate Bruno Franceschini not only because his inventive thinking continues to propel our industry forward, but also his 35 years of loyalty to his company and customers is something we can all aspire to!

It has been thrilling to see the sights and sounds of New York City and meet Bruno Franceschini, one of today’s leading developers in STEM. The next leg of our journey will take us through some historical parts of the northeast, so buckle up, and we’ll see you next week!
